It's a good point, and sorry I didn't say so in the question, but ping abc.local doesn't work either (though host abc.local does). I've fixed the question. pfSense automatically adds the local domain as a search domain when it sends out a DHCP lease, so that wouldn't be the issue. – Brian M. Hunt Sep 3 '11 at 14:05
